Adding alert specific variables into email generated by an alert

Use alert variables to insert alert-specific information into the email that is generated by an alert. For example, you can include the interface and node name, the date and time when the alert occurred, or the alert severity. 


  • NPM 11.5 and later
  • SAM 6.2 and later


  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console.
  2. Go to the Manage Alerts view.
    • In NPM 12.0 and later, click Alerts & Activity > Alerts, and click Manage Alerts in the upper right.
    • In earlier NPM versions, click Home > Alerts > Manage Alerts.
  3. Select the alert to edit, and click Edit Alert.
  4. Click on the Trigger Actions tab, and then edit the Email action. For example, click the pencil icon next to the email action.
  5. Expand Message and click Insert Variable next to Subject or Message to select the variable.  MT_alertVariables_configureActions.png
  6. Select variables to insert, and click Insert Variable.


  7. You should not "copy and paste" variable codes from other alert email actions - they will often not resolve and you will see "code" in the email message.  You can copy and paste within the same message to format the message.
  8. Complete the wizard.

    When the alert triggers, variables in the triggered email are populated with data for the affected nodes.
