Install and configure the SolarWinds Management Pack

The SolarWinds Management Pack allows you to view summary information about your network devices within the Operations Console.

SolarWinds Management Pack requirements

The SolarWinds Integration pack must be installed on all SCOM servers visible in the Management Group.

  • For SCOM 2007 you can only install Orion SCOM Management Pack on the Main SCOM server.
  • SCOM MP is not supported for SCOM Clustering on SCOM 2007.
  • At least one SolarWinds product is required. Additional products are optional.

Ensure your SolarWinds and Microsoft System Center Operations Manager deployment meet the following requirements:

  • SolarWinds SAM version 5.0 and later
  • SolarWinds WPM version 2.0 and later

  • This is the port used by the SolarWinds Web Console interface. You can change this in the Configuration Wizard. By default, port 80 is used.

Upgrade the SolarWinds Management Pack

Use the Add or Remove Programs tool from the Windows Control Panel to remove the previous version and then install this version.

Install the SolarWinds Management Pack

The management pack must be installed on your Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2012 server.

You must use a local administrator account. A domain administrator account does not work.

  1. Log on to your Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2012 server with a local administrator account.
  2. Run the SolarWinds Management Pack for SCOM 2012.msi file found in the SolarWinds Management Pack download package (you will find it under Additional Components for the NPM on the Customer Portal).
  3. Click Next on the Welcome window.
  4. Accept the license agreement, then select or confirm the install folder, and then click Next.
  5. Click Install.
  6. Review the installation progress.
  7. Click Finish.

Configure the SolarWinds Management Pack

After installing the SolarWinds Management Pack, the Configuration Wizard immediately launches. You can reconfigure your management pack by launching the wizard from the following location: Start > All Programs > SCOM  > SolarWinds Management Pack Configuration.

  1. If this is the first time you have run the Configuration wizard, complete the registration window, and then click Submit. Supply the following information:

    • Your full name
    • Email address
    • Phone number
    • Specify whether you own a licensed version of a SolarWinds product along with your SolarWinds ID, or are just evaluating the software at this time.
  2. Review the Welcome window of the Configuration Wizard, and then click Next.

  3. Provide the appropriate information on to connect to your SolarWinds server, and then click Next. You must correctly specify the following information:

    • Orion server IP address, host name, or fully qualified domain name
    • Orion Web Console port on the Orion server specified
    • Orion Administrator User ID to access the Web Console
    • Orion Administrator Web Console password


  4. Select the nodes and interfaces you want to monitor within Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2012, and then click Next.

    The Node List will be blank if you are running a stand-alone version of WPM because WPM does not have nodes.


  5. Select the NetFlow nodes you want to monitor, and then click Next.


  6. Select the Applications and Components you want to monitor, and then click Next.


  7. Select the Transactions and Transaction Steps you want to monitor, and then click Next.


  8. After you have selected what you want to monitor using this wizard, enter the data collection frequency in minutes and the change detection settings for the management pack, and then click Finish.


Ensure the Management Pack Is Correctly Installed

The left navigation pane of your Operations Console reflects your installation of the SolarWinds Management Pack. Once the Management Pack is installed, the navigation pane displays your SolarWinds products and looks similar to the following image.
