Incorrect Credentials on VCenter

Updated October 20, 2017

Overview

Monitoring a Node for VMWare polling resulted in incorrect credentials

Environment

  • NPM, all versions
  • VCenter

Cause

  • Unable to access https:\\<VCenter>\mob
  • Credentials are not the same the one used to access https:\\<VCenter>\mob

Resolution

  1. Confirm the Polling Engine where the VCenter is on, as it is Engine-dependent.
  2. Log in to the Polling Engine via Remote Desktop (RDP).
  3. Open an Internet browser.
  4. Ensure that you are able to connect to https:\\<VCenter>\mob.
** Replace <VCenter> with the hostname or IP address of the VCenter.
    1. If you are not able to even reach the page, firewall rules might be preventing connection.
    2. If you are using the IP address, there will be a warning, indicating that the page is insecure. Just proceed.
  5. You will be presented a prompt to access the https:\\<VCenter>\mob.
  6. The User Name and Password will be the one that will be used in Orion.

In Orion Web Console:

  1. Click Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Select the checkbox next to the Node and click Edit Properties.
  3. Fill in the rest of the information as needed.
  4. To poll for VMware information, click on the Poll for VMWare checkbox.
  5. It will expose the following settings that should be completed:

** Note that User name and Password must be the same as used to access https:\\<VCenter>\mob.
  6. Click Test to validate the credentials, and Submit the changes.

Notes:

  • When monitoring VCenter (via VMware Polling), you do not have to assign credentials to ESX servers.
  • The ESX hosts that are discovered by VCenter polling can be monitored by just ICMP.
  • If you require additional information that is server-orientated (e.g. Interface, Volumes, etc.), you will have to enable SNMP on the individual ESX hosts.
For assistance with enabling SNMP, seek help from VMware itself.
