Import nodes from NPM 10.2 to NPM 11.5.3

Overview

This article provides a workaround to import nodes from an old NPM database (10.2) to a new implementation of NPM (11.5.3 and later). Nodes cannot directly be imported between these two versions because the database structures are different.

The process includes a migration to a new version of SQL and upgrading NPM.

If you are upgrading from NPM 10.3 or earlier, we recommend starting with a fresh install. Read this article for details.

Environment

  • NPM 10.2
  • NPM 11.5.3

Steps

  1. Review the system requirements for NPM 11.5.3 in the NPM 11.5.X Administrator Guide.
  2. Prepare a new SQL server according to the requirements.
  3. Using 3rd party applications, like SQL Management Studio Express to create a backup of your database. Complete the entire SQL migration using this guide: Migrate the SolarWinds Orion SQL database to a new server
  4. On the new system, upgrade your NPM from 10.2 to 11.5.3 using NPM Upgrade Guide. Review the gotchas and requirements listed in the guide to prepare for the full upgrade.
