- This server does not need to reside on the same subnet as the primary and secondary Orion Platform servers.
- Any Microsoft® SQL edition may be used (including SQL Express)
- And, the SQL Server may be clustered.
To install HA, start from the server that will be the backup, and download the HA Installer from within the Orion Platform web interface.
Next, execute the installation by double-clicking on theSolarWinds Orion Installer file after it has been downloaded or copied to the secondary server. Enter the IP address of the fully qualified domain name of your main Orion server, along with the credentials used to log into the Orion web interface, and clickNext.
For the following step, select the additional server role you wish to install. Since my main Orion server is already Highly Available, let's go ahead and backup the Additional Polling Engine instead. Select Backup Server for Additional Polling Engine Protection and clickNext.
Once the installation is complete, the configuration wizard will start automatically. When prompted, enter theinformation for the same SQL instance and SQL database that was chosen for the primary server installed on the Orion Platform.
Once the installation is complete, the next step is to start the pool creation process. HA willopen the browser on the machine where it was installed and take you to the web interface of the Orion Platform running on the main server. On theHigh Availability Deployment Summaryscreen, you will see your newly added HA backup. Click on the High Availability Pool button to proceed with the pool creation process.
Next, name the pool and define a shared virtual IP address (or VIP) to be used by the pool for receiving syslog, SNMP traps, and NetFlow™ data.
The VIP is also used for accessing the Orion web interface for a main poller pool. To do this, enter an available IP address on the same subnet as both pool members of the pool that will be used for the VIP. If the IP address entered is invalid, not on the same subnet, or is already being used on the network, you will receive an error. Correct the IP address and proceed.
Once you are satisfied with the configuration, click Create Pool.
On the next screen, you will see all of your pools, the main server, and the backup.
After completing a High Availability installation, it is always a good idea to force a failover just to make sure everything is working correctly.
Click on the Failover Test button and wait for the results.
This screen shows that the test was successful.
