Overview

The article provides details on how the database summarization process works.

Environment

All NPM versions

Detail

The summarization process is used to keep the size of the database to a minimum as described in this example.
The following default retention settings or periods are used to poll an interface every nine minutes.

  • Detailed for 7 days
  • Hourly for 30 days
  • Daily for 365 days

The following lists the database summarization process:

  1. The raw information that is polled from the interface every nine minutes is stored in the Detailed table. This table will have around six data points every hour.
  2. When the information stored in the Detailed table reaches its retention period of 7 days, it will move to the Hourly table.
  3. When the information stored in the Hourly table reaches its retention period of 30 days, it will move to the Daily table. This table will have one data point for each day which is the average of the data points for that day stored in the Hourly table.
  4. Information stored in the Daily table that reaches its retention period of 365 days will be deleted from the tables.

The Database Maintenance process is run, by default, every day at 2:15 AM.
Go to Orion Web > Settings > All Settings > Polling Settings page to configure the retention settings.
