High Availability constantly disables Orion services

Overview

When High Availability (HA) is turned on, it constantly sets the Orion service to Disabled state. When the Orion service is set to Manual or Automatic in services.msc, it reverts to Disabled status.

Environment

  • NPM 12.0 SR1
  • NCM 7.5.1
  • High Availability v2016

Cause 

The following stack trace in the HighAvailability.Service.log file indicates a depreciating service in the SolarWinds Orion NCM Caching Service:

2017-05-11 21:25:35,994 [23] ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.HighAvailability.Resources.BaseOrionEngineResource - OrionEngineResource resource stop failed.

System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Service SolarWinds Orion NCM Caching Service was not found on computer '.'. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service does not exist as an installed service

Resolution

Do any of the following to resolve the issue:

  • Run sc delete to remove the service.
  • Add the service to the High Availability blacklist (C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\HighAvailability\Plugins\Blacklists\OrionMainPoller.xml).
