False alert: VMs with Large or Old Snapshots

Updated May 26, 2017

Overview

This article describes the issue where NPM incorrectly displays warnings such as the following:

  • NetPerfMon Event log: Snapshots using more than 2 GB storage space
  • Alert Triggered VMs with Large Snapshots

The VM does not contain any delta files or snapshots.

The alert can be dismissed but the VM is left with stale snapshots. The alert is triggered the next time the VM is polled.

Environment

  • NPM 12.0
  • VIM 2.1.2

Cause

The error is caused when there is stale data in the database that triggers an alert.

Resolution

Open the Database Manager and run the following query:

DELETE FROM VIM_Snapshots
DELETE FROM VIM_DiskFiles
DELETE FROM VIM_SnapshotDiskFileMapping

Allow the VM to poll. The fields will repopulate, but the alert should no longer trigger.
