Failed Orion server migration

This article describe the issue during a failed Orion server migration and how to recover once it occurs. It is possible that the database contains more than one Primary Orion server and because of this, the database configuration fails, or device do not poll after the migration is complete. 


All versions of Orion products


Scenarios that can result to this issue:

  1. Changing the hostname of the Orion server
  2. Installing a newer Orion application than the upgrade path allows on the new server
  3. Failure to re-assign elements to the new polling engine


The solutions below correspond to the scenario as numbered above.

Scenario 1:

  1. If possible, de-activate the license on the old Orion server, if not, contact customer service to get the license(s) reset after the steps below are completed.  
  2. Complete the steps to move all elements to the new polling engine as show in scenario 3.
  3. Assign your licenses to the new Orion server.
  4. Delete the unused polling engine.

Scenario 2:

  1. In this scenario, restore from a database backup taken prior to the attempted upgrade.
  2. Remove all Orion applications from the server.
  3. Follow the proper upgrade path using the Product Upgrade Advisor.

Scenario 3:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Manage Nodes and on the left hand side, click Group by Polling Engine.
  2. Select the old polling engine on the left hand side.
  3. Check the box next to Name to select nodes, and then click Select All Nodes.
  4. Under More Actions, select Change Polling Engine, and then assign the elements to the new polling engine.
  5. Delete the old polling engine.
