Overview

The following error appears while running the Configuration Wizard:

Exception while configuring plugin Orion Core Services component Orion Database. An error occurred while getting provider information from the database. This can be caused by Entity Framework using an incorrect connection string. Check the inner exception for details and ensure that the connection string is correct.

Environment

  • All products running on Orion Platform, all versions.
  • SQL Server 2008 and later

Cause

There are multiple causes for this error message.

The SQL Server Browser is disabled

The SQL Server Browser is disabled on the Server Manager. This must be running in order to reach out to the SQL instance holding the Orion Database. If this service is disabled, the Orion Configuration Wizard will be able to connect to the SQL server without having any issues. However when trying to use the connection string to reach out to the SQL, the instance will be rejected and the wizard will fail.

The authentication mode does not match

If you use the Configuration Wizard to change the authentication mode, the Configuration Wizard attempts to connect to the SQL server using a different authentication method than the server is expecting.

The authentication then fails and you may see the following error in the logs:

Microsoft SQL Server Error 18456 Severity 14 State 1

Resolution

Resolving the disabled SQL Server Browser

Make sure that the service status is set to Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Once done, rerun the Configuration Wizard and this issue will be resolved.

Resolving the authentication mode

  1. Login to the SQL server.
  2. Restart the MS SQL Server service.
  3. After the service has started, run the Configuration Wizard again.
