Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Updated September 8, 2016

Overview

The following error occurs when editing a page, view or web resource. It can also display when clicking on any node object:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Environment

Orion Core products

Cause

The error is caused by a corrupted or incorrectly formatted  resource folder in the C:\Inetpub\SolarWinds\Orion directory.

Resolution

Rebuilding the website on the Orion application server will resolve the issue. For issues where this error is displayed when clicking on a node object, a re-set of IIS may be sufficient to resolve this issue. As is this a more straight forward fix than rebuilding the website, we recommend this is attempted first to see if it resolves.
