Patch Manager installs components by default, including WSUS. SolarWinds recommends not to install WSUS where the NPM server is located. The Error 500 message is displayed on the NPM Web Console if the WSUS server is installed on the same NPM server.

Orion NPM and WSUS installed on the same server

NPM and WSUS share a compression DLL file but have different compression methods. This causes the NPM Web Console to crash.

Uninstall WSUS and Patch Manager if they are in the same location with the NPM server or perform the following steps as a workaround:

  1. Enter the following command to fix Orion:

    %windir%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name='xpress']

  2. Reset IIS using the following command:

If the issue is not resolved, reinstall IIS with the appropriate port bindings.

Note: When installing Patch Manager, WSUS should be on the remote server and the IIS bindings are set up separately from the Orion Web Console bindings. Use the Advanced settings during Patch Manager installation to allow you to set up separate IIS bindings and connect to the remote WSUS server.
