This error occurs due to a corrupted machine.config file.

Resolution

  1. Remove the corrupted machine.config file from C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\.
  2. Copy the same file from an old server backup.
  3. Save the old backup where you deleted the corrupted file.
