Overview

The following error is found in the ActionsExecution.log when testing a failed SMTP server test or e-mail:

ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Actions.Impl.Email.EmailMethodInvoker - Test for SMTP server (hostname:465, SSL enabled, Authentication enabled) failed
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040213): The transport failed to connect to the server.

   at Interop.cdosys.MessageClass.Send()
   at SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Actions.Utility.Smtp.Clients.CdoSmtpClient.Send()
   at SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Actions.Impl.Email.EmailMethodInvoker.SendTestEmail(String args)

Environment

All Orion environments

Cause 

There was a basic connectivity issue with the SMTP server.

Resolution

  1. Verify that you have not mistyped the server name or IP address in one of the following two locations:
    Settings > Manage SMTP Server in the Orion Web Console (if you are using the standard SMTP server test), or
    Alert Manager > Add Action > Send an Email/Page > Configure Action in the database (if you are sending an email/page settings).
  2. Troubleshoot basic network connectivity downstream from the Solarwinds server as this does not indicate any issues on the SolarWinds side.
