Duplicate IP addresses causing nodes to be mapped as VMs

Updated March 24, 2017

Overview

If there is a router or a switch, for example, and the polling IP address matches the IP address of a virtual machine found on one of the VM hosts monitored in Orion, that device may be seen as a VM.

Environment

All NPM versions

Cause

The Orion IVIM plugin maps virtual machines to their host based on the VM Mapping Order. By default, the IP address is used for this task.

Resolution

  1. If running VIM 7.1 insure VIM 7.1 Hotfix 2 is installed.
  2. Modify the SolarWinds.VIM.BusinessLayer.dll.config file in C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\VIM  (This may be installed on another drive).
  3. Change the VMMappingOrder key from its original value to:
    <add key="VMMappingOrder" value="MAC" />
  4. Restart all services from the Orion Service Manager.
  5. Go to Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Database Manager.
  6. If your Orion database is not listed in the left pane, complete the following steps:
    1. Click Add SQL Server.
    2. Using the format Server/Instance, select or provide the SQL Server instance you are using as your Orion database.
    3. Select the appropriate login method, providing credentials as required, and then click Connect to Database Server.
  7. Expand your Orion database in the left pane.
  8. Right click the VIM_VirtualMachines table, and then click Query Table.
  9. Replace the default query with the query listed below and click Execute query.

    --START--

    Update VIM_VirtualMachines
    SET NodeID = NULL

    --END--

  10. The NodeIDs will repopulate and mapped using the MAC addresses instead of IP addresses. This should be complete within 20 minutes.
