Deploy agent plug-in MSI over low-bandwidth connection

Updated January 3, 2017

Overview

In the event of a low-bandwidth connection between servers where an agent is to be deployed, the manual agent deployment may not succeed due to a timeout. In some cases, the connection will remain saturated for several days until the agent is disabled.

The agent can be deployed manually in order to bypass the timeout via the instructions below.

Environment

NPM version 12.x

Cause

The issue is caused by low-bandwidth connection timeout.

Resolution

  1. Ensure .NET 4.0 is installed (included with 4.5 which is automatically installed on 2012).

  2. Install Visual C++ Redistributable (both x64 and x86 versions) on the agent machine (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=40784).

  3.  Stop the Agent service.

  4. Copy all the .apkg files from the following location to the Agent machine, ensure that the copy actions are performed with an account with the proper administrative priveleges (or Run As Administrator):

    C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\AgentManagement\Plugins\

You do not need to copy DPIProbe, winpcap, msvcrt and NetFramework.

  5. Copy the .apkg files to C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Agent\Plugins\.

  6. In another folder (not in Plugins), rename all .apkg files to .zip.

  7. Extract the content of all the files to C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Agent\Plugins\.

  8. Restart the Agent service.
