This article describes how to delete Unknown or Down interfaces by bulk from the Orion Database.

All Orion Platform versions

Important Reminder:

  • Use an account with enough SQL privileges to update the table of your Orion database.
  • Create a backup of your database in case you need to roll back later.

NPM 12.2 and the new Manage Entities page

The NPM version 12.2 with the SolarWinds Orion Platform 2017.3 adds a new, more intuitive Manage Entities page with updated styling to manage your nodes.

  1. To view interfaces on a node, click the arrow at the end of a row. Interfaces display in the Related Entities pane.
  2. Select interfaces to delete, and click Delete.

Orion Platform does not monitor the deleted interfaces.

Delete Unknown or Down interfaces on Manage Nodes in the Orion Web Console

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console, and click Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. In the Show drop-down, select Interfaces.
  3. In the Group by pane, select Status.

In Group by, the GUI uses Node Only columns but the number of monitored elements in brackets respects the selection in the Show list.
For example, if your environment has 13 Nodes and 56 Interfaces, the number in brackets in the Group by pane with Status selected should add up to 13. When you change the selection in the Show list from 'Nodes' to 'Interfaces', the number of monitored elements displayed in the Group by pane gives a total of (56).

  4.   Select multiple interfaces to delete.

Selected interfaces are deleted.

Find and delete Unknown or Down interfaces with the Database Manager

Changing data manually in the database may result in inconsistent data displaying in the Orion Web Console.

View interfaces to delete

  1. On your Windows Server, search for Database Manager.
  2. Click on Add Default Server.
  3. Right-click on your SolarWindsOrion Database.
  4. Select New Query.
  5. Paste this query to VIEW all Interfaces that are currently Unknown or Down:
Select InterfaceID, Status, StatusLED From [dbo].[Interfaces]
Where StatusLED = 'Unknown.gif' OR StatusLED = 'Down.gif'

Now you have a list of interfaces that are Unknown or Down.

Delete interfaces with the Database Manager

Mass deleting interfaces is not simple, because the delete method is not supported. Be aware of the following:

  • When bulk deleting interfaces in the Orion Web Console, interfaces are moved into the DeletedInterfaces table.
  • Database maintenance that runs at night (by default at 2:15 a.m) then clears up references in many other tables.

To bulk delete the interfaces, you need to individually delete them by using the InterfaceIDs to INSERT and DELETE statements.

  1. Build a list of the interfaces from the Select SQL query above.
  2. Export the Select results into CSV, and use excel to build queries to mass delete the interfaces.

Example query:

delete from Interfaces where InterfaceID=953
insert into DeletedInterfaces (InterfaceId) values (953)

Alternatively, you could build a SQL query to find and mass insert and delete the interfaces.
