Delete .mq files in the MSMQ folder

This article describes how to clear MSMQ orphaned files if they filled up past the default 1 GB limit.

This issue can occur during to many different reasons such as polling related issues, CPU utilization issues, latency to the sql server, sql related issues and forces the polling engine to stop polling.


All NPM versions


  1. To correct this issue, complete the following procedure:
  2. Stop Services
  3. Log in to your SolarWinds server using an account with administrative access.
  4. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
  5. Stop all SolarWinds services.  Note: Leave the Orion Service Manager open.
  6. Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  7. Right-click Message Queuing, and then click Stop.    Note: Leave the Services window open.
  8. Clean out MQ Files in MSMQ Folder

  9. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\msmq\Storage\   Note: The default installation volume is C:.
  10. Delete all files with a MQ extension (*.MQ)  Note: There may be more than 520 files totalling 1 GB in size to be deleted from this folder.
  11. Restart Services

  12. In the Services window, right-click Message Queuing, and then click Start.
  13. In the Orion Service Manager, start all SolarWinds services.
