Overview

This article describes how to create a heartbeat alert in NPM.

The heartbeat alert ensures that the Orion service is up and running.

Environment

  • NPM with web-based alerting

Steps

  1. Add an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) node with a non-existent IP address that always display as Down.
  2. Click Alerts and Activity and select Alerts.
  3. Click Manage Alerts in the toolbar.
  4. Click Add New Alert in the toolbar.
  5. In the Alert Properties tab, enter an alert name, and click Next.
  6. In the Trigger Condition tab, select Only following set of objects and enter the node details for the ICMP node created in step 1.
The actual trigger condition should be set to alert when the Node status is equal to Down, as shown below.image.png
  7. Click Next.
  8. In the Reset Condition tab, select Reset the alert automatically after xxx minutes, where xxx is the time interval you require between heartbeats.
  9. In the Trigger Actions tab, set up the email or other output that you want from the alert.
  10. Complete the fields and options in the remaining tabs as required.
