Create a Group of Nodes alert, using a Custom property to Identify Group name and Group Member Name With Variables

This article provides steps on how to create an alert on a group of nodes using a custom property. It gives you the option of using variables to pull back the Group Name and Group Member Name of the Node that has triggered the alert. 


Orion version 11.5.x


To create a custom property and associate your Group with it:

  1. Go to your Web Console >  Settings >Manage Custom Properties.
  2. Add custom property.
  3. Create a new custom property based on the selected object type - Groups.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Add Property name.
  6. Format - YES/NO.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select Group/s > Choose your Group/s Add > Select Group/s.
  9. Assign value for Custom Property Name to selected Groups - Drop down menu select Yes.
  10. Click Submit.


To create your Alert:

  1. Go to your Web Console > Settings > Manage alerts.
  2. Add New Alert and click Name the Alert.
  3. Click Next.


Trigger Condition

I want to alert on:

Group Member


Scope of the alert:

Only the following set of Objects

All Objects where - All Child conditions must be satisfied (And)

Group member - "Created Custom Property (See Fig 2, 3)" - is equal to - yes


Clink on + icon

Add Single Value Comparison (Recommended)


Add trigger condition:

All conditions must be satisfied (And)

Group Member – Group Member Status - is equal to - 2 


Reset Condition

Reset this alert when trigger condition is no longer true (Recommended)


Time of Day

Alert is always enabled, no schedule needed


Trigger Action

Add Action

Send an Email/Page  (Example) > Configure Action > Enter details, Subject and Message in Message body.


Repeat steps for Reset action.

When searching for variables to populate your subject line or message body of your email/Action use Search word NAME.


Possible Variables to insert into your Alert Action.

Alert Name                    ${N=Alerting;M=AlertName}

Group member Display Name            ${N=SwisEntity;M=EntityDisplayName}

Group member full name         ${N=SwisEntity;M=FullName}

Group member name            ${N=SwisEntity;M=Name}

Group Name                                            ${N=SwisEntity;M=Container.Name}

  4. Click Next.

  5. Add Trigger Action.

  6. Click Next. 

  7. Add Reset Action.

  8. Click Next and then submit.
