Configuring multi-threaded database maintenance

The following hotfix is available for Orion Platform version 2013.1, and it may significantly improve the performance of your database maintenance operations. Currently, database maintenance is a single-threaded process. This hotfix allows you to configure the number of threads on which your database maintenance operations run.

Notes:

  • You do not need to install this HotFix if you are not experiencing this issue.
  • This fix requires SolarWinds NPM 10.5 (Orion Core 2013.1).
  • No IIS restart is required

To install this HotFix:

 

  1. Log on to your primary SolarWinds server as an administrator.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Services Manager.
  3. Click Shutdown Everything.
    Note: Leave Orion Services Manager open.
  4. Create a backup of the file Solarwinds.Orion.Core.Data.dll.
    Note: The default location of this file is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\.
  5. On your SolarWinds database server, open SQL Server Management Studio, and then log in as an administrator.
  6. Right-click your SolarWinds database, and then click New Query.
  7. Execute the following query:

    INSERT INTO [dbo].[Settings]
           ([SettingID]
             ,[Name]
             ,[Description]
             ,[Units]
             ,[Minimum]
             ,[Maximum]
             ,[CurrentValue]
             ,[DefaultValue])
    VALUES
           ('SWNetPerfMon-Settings-MaxMaintenanceThreads'
             ,'Max Number of DBM Threads'
             ,'Allows you to change the number of threads used during database maintenance.'
             ,'threads'
             ,1
             ,8
             ,3
             ,2)
    GO
     
  8. Launch the attached file, setup.exe, and then complete the wizard.
  9. Confirm that all SolarWinds services have restarted in the Orion Services Manager.
    Note: Click Start Everything to start any services that have not restarted.

To uninstall this HotFix:

 

 

  1. Log on to your primary SolarWinds server as an administrator.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Services Manager.
  3. Click Shutdown Everything.
    Note: Leave Orion Services Manager open.
  4. Delete the file Solarwinds.Orion.Core.Data.dll.
    Note: The default location of this file is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\.
  5. Copy your backup of the file Solarwinds.Orion.Core.Data.dll into its origiinal location.
    Note: The default location of this file is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\.
  6. On your SolarWinds database server, open SQL Server Management Studio, and then log in as an administrator.
  7. Right-click your SolarWinds database, and then click New Query.
  8. Execute the following query:

    DELETE [dbo].[Settings] WHERE SettingID='SWNetPerfMon-Settings-MaxMaintenanceThreads'
     
  9. In Orion Services Manager, click Start Everything.
