Configuration Wizard is stuck at importing sample maps when IPAM is installed

Updated May 6, 2017

Overview

This article describes the issue when the Configuration Wizard gets stuck at importing sample maps during an IPAM upgrade.

Environment

Upgrade of any IPAM version.

Cause

Cause 1

  • IPAM failed to uninstall the previous release / installed version if a domain account was used instead of a local server administrator account. SolarWinds recommends to use a local server administrator account as you might not have all the permissions needed for a successful installation. We have seen this mainly after upgrade to IPAM 4.5.0

Cause 2

  • Bad schema file left in directory, SWIS will not start up correctly.

Resolution

Cause 1

Option 1:

  • Please go to the Add / Remove (Programs  & Features ) and uninstall both versions of IPAM and then re-install the newer version.

Option 2:

  • After Uninstalling both IPAM - go to windows registry > HKLM>Software>Wow6432Node>Solarwinds.Net>ConfiguredModules

 Delete All EXCEPT Default String

  • Remove IPAM Folder from

Volume:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion

Volume:\Inetpub\Solarwinds\Orion

  • Ran Configuration Wizard
  • Reinstall IPAM v4.5.x

Cause 2

  • An old IPAM Hotfix was implemented incorrectly. A schema issue can be caused by IPAM.core.orig.xml that is not ignored by SWIS because SWIS loads all files *.XML from  c:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Information Service\3.0\Schemas\   Cut the file IPAM.core.orig.xml to the desktop and re-run the wizard. Note other modules can be the root cause, so other bad schemas within this directory can cause the same issue with importing sample maps.
