Overview

The database selection screen where the new database is specified is not responding after clicking Next.

This can happen during a Configuration Wizard run after a database was migrated to a cluster.

There are currently two known causes for this issue, both of which can be found via unique error messages in the ConfigurationWizard.log file -

The following error message can found in the log:

< 2016-02-19 17:20:59,442 [1] ERROR SceneContainer - SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo, Version=11.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
File name: 'Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo, Version=11.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91'
   at SolarWinds.ConfigurationWizard.Host.Presentation.DatabaseConfiguration.DatabaseServerScene.DoValidateConfig(Boolean silentMode) >

Alternatively, you may see the following error in the ConfigurationWizard.log file:

ERROR SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException:  An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.Sqlclient.SqlExceptions: The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_instance_regread' , database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'.

Environment

All NPM versions

Cause

The user is missing the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects application, or

If you see the The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_instance_regread' , database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'.

this indicates that the SQL user specified in the Configuration Wizard needs to have the 'sysadmin' server role applied in SQL Server Management Studio.

Resolution

  1. Download Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Shared Management Objects.
  2. At the top of the page, click + to expand Install Instructions.
  3. Scroll down to Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Shared Management Objects downloads for both x86 and x64.
Note: Download both packages and rename them while downloading.
  4. Restart Configuration Wizard.
  5. Connection to the specified database should now be available and the Next button should work.

or

  1.  Add the 'sysadmin' server role to the specified user in SQL Management Studio (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...ql.110%29.aspx)
