Cisco switch stack models are dropping SNMP requests

Updated October 5, 2016

Overview

After upgrading to NPM 12.0 or to a later version, you may find that some of the Cisco switch stack models such as 3850's are dropping SNMP requests.

The device may show some error on itself such as:

“%SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input queue full”

Environment

NPM 12.0 and later

Cause

Here is exactly what changed in NPM 12, related to the new poller that was enabled.

(N.SwitchStack.SNMP.Cisco)
New Switch Stack Feature
So we do send more SNMP requests, however the device should be able to cope with this.

Resolution

  1. If you do not want to benefit from the new features you ,can always turn this off by List Resources against that node and remove the switch stack poller.
  2. Change to SNMP v1 instead of v2. V1 does not do get-bulk requests.
  3. Deselect Topology.
  4. Increase the SNMP Input Queue on the device.
  5. For more in depth analysis, consider logging a ticket with Cisco to investigate further.
