Overview

This article describes the steps on how to change the information sent for the Send SNMP Trap action in alerts using the SNMP Trap Editor.

Environment

All Orion versions

Steps

Warning:

  • Consult your System Administrator before performing the following procedure.
  • SolarWinds strongly recommends that you only edit the ForwardSyslog.trap file as instructed. Any additional modifications may result in system performance issues or may create an error state.
  • Save a copy of the original ForwardSyslog.trap file to your local drive as a backup file, in case you need to roll back later.

  1. On the server with Solarwinds Engineer's Toolset, double click the SNMP Trap Editor tool under apps in 2012.
Note: As an alternative, go to All Programs/Solarwinds Engineer Toolset/ Classic Tools in 2008 or older to launch the SNMP Trap Editor tool.
  2. Click Open.
  3. Go to the install directory for Solarwinds, by default it is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\.
  4. Open the default trap template ForwardSyslog.trap in a text editor.
  5. Edit the value column for each OID variable and change the information based on your preference.
  6. Save the changes and close the file.
  7. Open the Orion Web Console.
  8. Edit the alert and the action so that it uses the trap template you modified. Refer to SNMP Trap Editor.
