Cannot see Layer3 Network Topology for Devices

Updated October 3, 2016

Overview

Some of nodes are connected through the WAN Layer 3 GRE tunnels and NPM is unable to calculate the Network Topology for these nodes. Due to this, connections cannot be created on the Network Atlas Map and the ConnectNow feature also does not work.

Environment

  • NPM 10.4.1 and later
  • Orion Core 2012 and later

Cause

MPLS info cannot be utilized, however you can still create L2.L3 connections between those devices:

L2 based on data from CDP

L3 based on routing data

These connections have not been created because the default calculation configuration is not using the interface type 131 (tunnel) so possible connections with the tunnel interfaces are not even taken into account as they are not used for algorithm input.

Resolution

  1. Log into the Orion server.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Calculation.cfg.
  3. Backup the Calculation.cfg file to your desktop (Just in case you need to roll back changes).
  4. Stop All Orion Services.
  5. In original Calculation.cfg file:
add value 131 to this line
    <ProviderConfig Key="AllowedIfTypes" Value="6;53;54;62;69;117;131;135;136" />
  6. Restart All Orion Services.
  7. Update Topology (Allow it to complete a polling cycle).
