Browser crashes when trying to use the Add To Layout button when creating a report

Updated February 9, 2017

Overview

You may find that all browsers crash when trying to use the Add To Layout button when creating a report (IE, Firefox and Chrome are all affected).
You will receive an HTML1524: Invalid HTML5 DOCTYPE message when using the F11 diagnostics in IE.

Environment

All Orion environments

Cause

The Orion Web Console is trying to execute the actual query and get one row to validate the query, this operation is normally fast and thus done synchronously; the problem is that this very query is slow and takes above 20 minutes to execute.

Resolution

It is essential for reporting performance to put timestamp related conditions first, Node conditions second (if any).
The rest of conditions should be arranged from most data narrowing to least; any conditions dependent on related entities which needs to join data from SQL (such as IP Address Group Name) needs to be at the very end.
