AppInsight for Exchange: The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request

Updated July 26, 2016

Overview

This article overviews a solution for when you have an Unknown status in AppInsight for Exchange, and it returns the following status:

Connecting to remote server X.X.X.X failed with the following error message: The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request. Verify that the service on the destination is running and is accepting requests. Consult the logs and documentation for the WS-Management service running on the destination, most commonly IIS or WinRM. If the destination is the WinRM service, run the following command on the destination to analyze and configure the WinRM service: "winrm quickconfig". For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic

Environment

All SAM versions with AppInsight templates

Cause

The error is due to an issue in the WinRM configuration.

This error message is also displayed when the World Wide Publishing service is disabled on the server.

Resolution

  1. Establish a RDP connection to the machine you are trying to monitor AppInsight on.
  2. Open an elevated PowerShell prompt.
  3. Run the winrm quickconfig command.
  4. If this does not work or it says that it is already set up, run the following command:
    Enable-PSRemoting -Force
  5. Test or configure AppInsight again.
