Angle brackets (<,>) are replaced by parentheses ((,)) in interface names

Issue

All angle brackets (<, >) used in interface names are replaced by parentheses ((, )).

For example, an interface named Gi0/0 -> Core Router is renamed to Gi0/0 -) Core Router.

Environment

Orion Platform, all versions

Resolution

SolarWinds forces this substitution so angle brackets in interface names are not interpreted as markup (HTML, XML, etc.) tag delimiters. Additionally, angle brackets not explicitly associated with markup tags may be used in cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

Original interface names may be restored, as follows:

  1. Import the attached registry file:
    1. Save and extract the attached archive (HtmlSanitize_Disable.zip) to your primay SolarWinds server.
    2. Open the Registry Editor (Start > Run, and then enter regedit).
    3. Click File > Import.
    4. Open the appropriate (32-bit or 64-bit) registry file.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
  3. Click Shutdown Everything, and then wait for all services to stop.
  4. Click Start Everything, and then wait for all services to restart.
  5. Complete a full rediscovery of all nodes with affected interfaces.
