Overview

Describes advantages to monitoring a vCenter instead of individual ESX hosts.

Environment

  • Server & Application Monitor (SAM)

Detail

Monitoring a vCenter instead of individual ESX hosts is advantageous for several reasons:

Simplified credentials
vCenter provides a single entry point to obtain information about each ESX server it manages. To monitor individual ESX servers, you would have to specify credentials for each.

Data center and cluster information
vCenter provides data center and cluster information. This information is not available if you monitor individual ESX servers.

Visible hierarchy
Monitoring a vCenter lets your Orion server show you the hierarchy tree. You can browse the tree to see which ESX servers and hosts are in cluster and data centers, and see their vCenter assignments. If you monitor just the ESX servers, all you get is a large list of individual ESX servers.
