APE installer error on Orion Scalability Engine Maintenance Check: The license we have for Orion Scalability Engine is outdated

Updated: July 17th, 2017

Overview

This article provides brief information and steps to resolve the issue when you cannot upgrade the Additional Polling Engine due to an error with the Orion Scalability Engine license. This issue affects upgrading Additional Pollers for NPM 12.0 to 12.0.1 and to NPM 12.1 RC and SAM 6.2.4 to 6.3 or 6.4 RC.

When you upgrade, the installer runs pre-flight checks before installing to verify hardware and software requirements.

The error occurs when you install the Orion Scalability Engine Installer on the APE. A Maintenance Check runs and may return the following error:

The license we have for Orion Scalability Engine is outdated.
If you want to upgrade to Orion Scalability Engine, you must provide a current activation key, which you will find in Customer Portal.

You will see the following screen:

Environment

  • NPM upgrades from 12.0 to 12.0.1 or 12.1 RC on Additional Poller
  • SAM upgrades to 6.3 or 6.4 RC on Additional Poller

Cause

Old Stackable Poller licenses remained in the original Licensing store and in original legacy License Manager. These licenses should migrate to the new web-based License Manager provided in Orion Platform 2016.2 and later (NPM 12.0.1, SAM 6.3, etc).

The following image provides an overview of licenses you may see still in the License Manager application:

Resolution

To resolve, deactivate the licenses in the License Manager application. After upgrading, you can reactivate the licenses using the new web-based License Manager. These instructions include online and offline modes.

Important: You should have the main poller, or Orion server, already upgraded prior to completing these instructions for your additional polling engines.

Deactivate license when online

  1. If you need the License Manager: install Core 2016.1 (NPM 12.0) License Manager.
  2. Start the License Manager from the SolarWinds Program group.

  3. Select the checkboxes for your product in License Manager, and click Deactivate.

    A deactivation wizard opens.
    • To deactivate more than one product at the same time, select the checkboxes for all licenses. In this case, the deactivation file will contain information about each product.
    • In certain products, you can deactivate licenses by using the internal licensing tool of the product.
  4. Complete the deactivation wizard for all Additional Poller Licenses listed in the License Manager application.
  5. Continue upgrading your Orion Platform products such as NPM 12.0.1, NPM 12.1 RC, etc. Follow the upgrade guide for your product for instructions.
  6. After you complete the upgrade on the additional poller, use the web-based License Manager to activate the license.

Deactivate licenses when offline

You can deactivate licenses if your servers are offline using the steps below:

The License Manager tool allows offline deactivation with a deactivation file you can upload to the Customer Portal.

  1. If you need the License Manager: install Core 2016.1 (NPM 12.0) License Manager.
  2. Start the License Manager from the SolarWinds Program group.
  3. Select the checkboxes for your product in License Manager, and click Deactivate.

    A deactivation wizard opens.
    • You can deactivate more than one product at the same time. In this case, the deactivation file will contain information about each product.
    • In certain products, you can deactivate licenses by using the internal licensing tool of the product.
  4. Complete the deactivation wizard, and save the deactivation file.
  5. Log in to the SolarWinds Customer Portal, and navigate to the License Management page.
  6. Select your product instance, and click Deactivate license manually.
  7. In the Manage License Deactivation page, browse for the deactivation file you created in License Manager, and click Upload.
The deactivated licenses are now available to activate on a new computer.
  8. Log in to the computer on which to install your products, and begin the upgrade such as NPM 12.0.1, NPM 12.1 RC, etc. Follow the upgrade guide for your product for instructions.
  9. After you complete the upgrade on the additional poller, use the web-based License Manager to activate the license offline. The license you deactivated earlier is assigned to the new implementation.
