2502 and 2502 error codes

Overview

There is a 2502 or 2503 error code displayed when you install or uninstall NPM:

  • The installer encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2502.
  • The installer encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2503.

 

Environment

NPM 12.0.1 on Windows Server 2016

Resolution

  1. Check the Windows Installer Service.
    1. Click Start and enter services.
    2. Scroll down and find the Windows Installer.  Double-click Windows Installer in the Services list.
    3. On the General tab, make sure that the service is started under Service Status.
    4. Click Start > OK if the service is not running.
  2. Unregister and register the Windows Installer again using the following commands:
    1. Click Start and enter MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER in the search box.
    2. Click Start and enter MSIEXEC /REGSERVER.
    3. Run the installer again.
  3. Grant full privileges to the group Everyone in C:\Windows\TEMP
