Writing job results and other files to a Network Share

Overview

Files (for example,  job results and configurations) cannot be saved to the network share.

Environment

  • NCM 7.2
  • NCM 7.2.1
  • NCM 7.2.2
  • NCM 7.3
  • NCM 7.3.1
  • NCM 7.4

Cause

The NCM job runs as a service under the Local System account and permissions are set as such in respect to the services responsible to run the job. Since this is running under the Local System account, an error will be encountered if NCM tries to write to a drive not residing on the local server. Modifying permissions to the services responsible will result in other Orion failures and should not be done.

Resolution

Upgrade and configure a domain account

Upgrade to NCM 7.3.2 or later to resolve this issue. NCM 7.3.2 and later versions allow you to set a domain account with sufficient rights to access both the Orion Servers/files and the shared resource and files that you want to write to.

To configure the account:

  1. Login to the Orion Web Console.
  2. Choose Settings > NCM Settings > Advanced Settings > Network Share Settings.
  3. Check the box and provide the Username and Password of an account with sufficient permissions on each server and folder location to read and write the files.

Note: If the folder you want to save the files to does already not exist, you must create the folder manually. NCM will not create the folder.

If you cannot upgrade

If an upgrade is not possible, you must save files to the Orion Polling Engine the device is managed by, and then manually move the files to a different location.
