"Unexpected Website Error"

Issue:

CONFIG Summary in Orion Web Console fails to load, giving instead an "Unexpected Website Error." This can occur when the default language for the 'ConfMgmt_adm' user is not set to English.

The full error reads:
The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. Local socket timeout was '00:10:00'

Different issues can cause this error, two of which have the specific solution included here.

Scenario/Solution1:

If you see message in the diagnostic results:

ERROR SolarWinds.InformationService.Serialization.XmlSerializer - Error serializing query results
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding

Then the NCM database is underperforming due to the size of its dataset.

In this case, purge old configs:

  1. Back up the NCM database.
  2. As needed, use NCM to export configs out to an archive.
  3. Open SQL Server Management Studio and login on the database server.
  4. Select the NCM database objects in the left pane.
  5. Issue this SQL statement:

Scenario/Solution 2:

If you see this exception in Orion.InformationService.log (by default: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SolarWinds\InformationService):

declare @mdate datetime

set @mdate=’{put date here}’

delete from ConfigArchive where DownloadTime < @mdate

delete from CacheDiffResults where CacheID in

(select CacheID from ComparisonCache where TimeStamp < @mdate)

delete from ComparisonCache where TimeStamp < @mdate

Then open SQL Server Management Studio and do the following:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a nvarchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value.

  1. Connect it to your SQL Server where NCM database is located. Your NCM username should be listed (among others); by default, the NCM database user is ‘SolarWindsCM’.
  2. Open the "Security" tree node and then a node called "connections" or "logins".
  3. In the dialog at the bottom right set the default language to "English".
  4. If needed--in case the CONFIG Summary in the Orion Web Console continues to show the error--restart SolarWinds Information Service (Administrative Tools > Services).

Scenario/Solution 3:

You may see a website error if your database is using an unsupported language.

SolarWinds supports using NCM with database servers setup in these languages: English, German, Japanese, and Chinese; but only supports storing characters in the UTF8 set.

There is a case in which NCM encounters an error with a SQL Server whose default language is German. The error is a result of date-time formatting differences between SolarWinds Information Services and NCM and the result is that the NCM Summary page fails to load. This issue will be fixed in a future release.

For now the workaround is to do this:

1. Open the SQL Server Management Studio.
2. Connect the SQL Server that hosts the NCM database.
3. Open the "Security" tree node and then "logins".
4. Uour NCM username should be listed (amounts others). By default NCM database user is ‘SolarWindsCM’
5. Right-click your username and select "Properties".
6. In the dialog at the right bottom "default language"to "English".
7. Load the NCM Summary page.
