Unable to connect to polling engine "xyz" on relevant server. Verify that NCM 7.x.x is installed

Updated June 29th, 2016

Overview

If there are devices connected to NCM on an Additional Poller, and the NCM plugin is not installed, NCM would not be able to access these devices. The following error is received:

Unable to connect to polling engine "xyz" on relevant server. Verify that NCM 7.x.x is installed

Note: Starting with NCM 7.2.x, NCM is able to leverage an Additional polling engine for Scalability purposes.

Environment

  • NCM 7.3.x and later

Cause

When NCM is using an Orion Core structure where Additional polling engines are part of the environment, it is mandatory to install the Individual polling engine plugin on the Orion Additional Polling engines.  These are included in the Orion Additional Component Download and not the NCM installer download

Resolution

  1. Download the Additional Polling Engine Installer from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.
  2. Save it on the Additional Polling Engine server for both the Core and the NCM additional Polling engine.
  3. On the server that is (or intended) to be an Additional Polling Engine, install the Orion additional Poller, if it is not already installed.
  4. Verify that the installation is completed and it is listed in the Settings on the Orion Web Console in the Details >Polling Engines.
  5. On the Additional polling engine, install the NCM component corresponding with the version of NCM installed on the primary Orion server.
Note: For NCM 7.3.x or NCM 7.4 only.
  6. Register the Components that do not require a license and complete the Orion Configuration Wizard.
  7. Repeat this for all pollers.
  8. Verify a config can be downloaded for at least one device on each Orion Polling Engine.
