Transfer Setup Error after upgrading to NCM 7.6

Updated April 18th, 2016

Overview

Running a configuration back up manually or via job get the error "Transfer Error Setup".

Environment

  • NCM 7.6

Cause

Upon upgrading NCM to 7.6, a COM object from the registry got corrupted.

Check the NcmBusinessLayerPlugin log and you can see the following error:

ERROR SolarWinds.NCM.Transfer.TransferSetupHelper - NCMTransfer IP:1<IP> - Setup Session ErrorSystem.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface type 'SWTelnet9.Session'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{5186169D-B894-496E-981D-504F82682F08}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)).
   at SolarWinds.NCM.Transfer.TransferSetupHelper.CreateSession(TransferNode node, DeviceCommands commands)

Resolution

1. Login as a Local Admin
2. Go to Add/Remove programs
3. Find there and uninstall all versions of ‘SolarWinds Orion Network Configuration Manager‘ (including 7.6 version) and ‘SolarWinds Orion NCM-NPM Integration'(NCM-NPM Integration does not exist in NCM 7.6. If you have this module, it's a leftover from previous version and needs to be uninstalled). There may be multiple old versions installed.
4. Cancel Config Wizard, which may start at the end of uninstall process.
5. IMPORTANT: Delete entire 'NCM' installation subdirectory (by default C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\NCM)
5. Run NCM 7.6 installer complete the installation process and proceed running the Configuration Wizard.
