WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

Unable to back up configuration of Cisco ASA device

Overview

When backing up configuration from device (Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance/ASA) NCM shows the following error:

Connectivity issues, discarding configuration (or configuration is too short)

Environment

NCM any version

Cause

This issue occurs when the wrong device template is chosen by the NCM Auto Determine feature. With the different sysObjectID of Cisco ASA models, the Auto Determine feature may fail to identity the correct model of device and in turn will fail to use the generic template (Cisco IOS), which is not compatible with all ASA devices.

Resolution

  1. In the Orion Web Console, select the node and click Edit properties.
  2. Scroll down to NCM Properties > Communication > Device Template and from the drop-down menu, select Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance.
  3. You may also need to provide the credentials for the protocol settings.
  4. Click Submit and run the backup again.
