Overview

This article provides brief information on the reason a NCM installation fails with an Invalid Exit Code.

Environment

All NCM modules

Cause

The issue is caused by any of the following:

  • User account is not Local Built-in Administrator.
  • UAC is enabled.
  • Antivirus is enabled.
  • Server is STIG'ed.
  • User account under the effects of HIPS/HBSS.

Resolution

  1. Log on to Orion server as Local Built-in Administrator.
  2. Disable UAC.
  3. Disable Antivirus or include the exclusions listed here.
  4. Disable STIG or parts of STIG.
  5. Disable HBSS/HIPS.

Another Option is to manually install components of NCM:

  1. Run the NCM install package as Administrator.
  2. Open up "Run" and enter %Temp% to open up the NCM install package directory.
  3. Navigate to SWOrionSetup/SubInstallers.
  4. Copied out from the directory to the desktop the two following files:
    1. SolarWinds-Orion-NCM-v#.#.#-NPM-Integration.exe
    2. SolarWinds-Orion-NCM-v#.#.#-Server.msi
  5. Now, right-click on these files one after the other and install as Administrator.
  6. Cancel any Configuration Wizard that generates when run these two install files.
  7. After both stated the install completed, verify by going to Control Panel > Program and Features.
  8. Run the NCM install package as Administrator and this time it will detect both are installed and the Installer Wizard should continue through to the Configuration Wizard, which should be ran till finished.
  9. Verify NCM is officially installed and running by going to the Orion Web Console.
