WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

NCM and Database Connectivity Issues

Table of contents
No headers

Issue:

SQL becomes unresponsive due to crash, server reboot, maintenance, etc., and NCM is unable to connect to SQL. The following error is noticed:

Service cannot be started. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user 'SolarWindsNCMLogon'.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning()

Resolution:

Run the NCM configuration wizard selecting all the following options:

  • Database
  • Services
  • Startup Settings

Click through the wizard until you get to the "Database Account" setting and create a new SQL account. Proceed through the configuration wizard and allow it to run. When the configuration wizard is complete, verify that NCM is able to connect to SQL.
