NCM Cisco IOS Telnet Devices Cannot Log In, Random Characters

Since NCM 7.3.0 and higher, some Cisco devices forced to use telnet seem to have a tendency to display strange characters ( ÿúÿð  for example) in either the username/password fields or both.  This has the effect of causing NCM to fail to login to the device in order to retrieve the config.  Please note this does not appear to have been an issue in NCM 7.2.2 and before, nor is it an issue with devices using SSH to connect, seems primarily limited to telnet devices.


NCM 7.3.0 and above


A custom device connection template has been created that should allow NCM to work around this issue.  It can be found at


If you're running NCM 7.3.2 or before copy this to the \DeviceTypes\ folder on each NCM polling engine.  By default this path is c:\Program files (x86)\Solarwinds\Orion\NCM\DeviceTypes.


It basically adds the following lines in the device template to accommodate the extra characters:


        <Command Name="CustomUserNamePrompt" Value="Username:"/>

        <Command Name="CustomPasswordPrompt" Value="Password:"/>


If you're running NCM 7.4 or higher, the device templates are no longer stored as flat files on the poller.  Instead you can manage them in the web console by going to Settings->NCM Settings->Under the Advanced Settings section there is a Device Templates section.  On this page you can either download this from thwack directly, or import it from a flat file.


Once this device template exists on your system, just edit this node in question and choose this specific device template.  By default all devices are using the Auto Determine option.  In this case you'll need to select this specific device template.
