This article goes over why NCM jobs throws the error:

Unable to locate or error loading device template.

All versions of NCM

The causes are the following:

  • Device template format or commands lines are incorrect
  • On NCM 7.3.2 or prior the device template is missing or was not copied over after an Application Migration.

  1. Double check command lines and make sure they are correct in the templates.
    1. On NCM 7.3.2 or prior, the Device templates are located on the Orion application server in C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\NCM\Device Type
    2. For NCM 7.4.0 and higher, go to the Orion web console > Settings > NCM Settings > Device Templates under Advanced Section.
  2. Make sure when copying commands from a text file or another document, that there are not any strange formats, paste it into Notepad, copy the data from there and then paste into the XML editor or manually type it out.
  3. On NCM 7.3.2 or prior, make sure the device template is located on the Orion application server located at C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\NCM\Device Type, if the there was a recent migration, the Device Templates will have to be copied over from the Original server and placed in the same directory.
