Overview

This article describes the issue when the Configuration Wizard finishes, applying NPM 11.5. hotfix 6, you receive the following error:

Could not alter datatype of NCM_RTNAudit.message to nvarchar(500)Alter failed Column 'Message'

Environment

All versions of NCM

Cause

This issue occurs when you have NCM_RTNAudit.message columns set to to nvarchar(MAX). A report might have been created due to some issue on RTN functionality and was provided with SQL query to increase the size of this column. And when re-running the Configuration Wizard, it tries to set it back to the original 500 characters and fails since it is not possible to decrease size of the column (data loss prevention).

Resolution

Follow steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Run text editor (i.e. Windows Notepad) as admin (right click and select Run As Administrator)
  2. Open below file for edition (default installation location)

    C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\NCM\ConfigMgmtEngine8.DBStructure

  3. Search for below phrase which starts section where table NCM_RTNAudit is defined

    Table Name="NCM_RTNAudit"

  4. Modify size of the Message column from default 500 to MAX

    [Message] [nvarchar] (max) NOT NULL,

  5. Save file.
  6. Re-run the Configuration Wizard.
