Overview

All devices are setup for SNMPv3, but SNMPv2 traps alerts are being sent by multiple devices intermittently. Checking the Trap Viewer you will see the rule and the condition is when SNMPv2 OID is equal to snmpTRAPOID= SNMPv2-MIB:authentication failure.

Environment

All NCM versions

Cause

NCM  Inventory Settings is enabled and sending the SNMPv2 request causing the traps to fire. This is generally for the Extended VLAN inventory that is enabled by default.

Resolution

Go to NCM Settings > Inventory Settings and select "Disable inventory lookup" and Disable Extended VLAN inventory
