Use a shared folder as the destination for NTA Flow Storage Database backups

Table of contents

Issue

If you set a shared folder located at another computer as the destination for NTA Flow Storage Database backups, you cannot create backups. If you go to the Backup Scheduler (NetFlow Settings > Database Settings > Backup Scheduler), you will find an appropriate error in the Backup status, such as "An error occurred during the backup on xx at xx. The specified directory xx does not exist."

Cause

NTA does not see the shared folder because your computer does not have the rights to access it.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, you need to add the computer with the shared folder into the same domain as your NTA Flow Storage Database server, and share the folder.

  1. Get both computers into the same domain. For more information, search Microsoft support pages for adding computers to the same domain for your operating system, such as Connecting your computer to a domain for Windows 7.
  2. Log in to the server where the shared folder is located and provide your NTA Flow Storage Database server rights to access it:
    1. Navigate to the shared folder in Windows Explorer, right-click it and select Properties.
    2. Go to the Sharing tab and click the Share button.
    3. Type"[Domain]\[ComputerB]$" and click Add.
Domain is the common domain name.
ComputerB is the name of the NTA Flow Storage Database server which needs to access the shared folder.
Note: Set both read and write rights for the folder (Full Control). For more information, consult the help for your operating system, such as Microsoft KB on Sharing files and folders on Windows 7.
    4. Click Share.

You should be able to execute backups now. For more information about NTA Flow Storage Database backups, see Configuring NTA Flow Storage Backups in NTA online help.
