Top XX Endpoint Resource data is doubled

Table of contents

Updated June 15th, 2016

This article explains the Top XX Endpoint resource data compared to other resources in NTA.

Environment

All NTA versions

Detail

Endpoints always appear to show a doubled amount of data (rate, bytes transferred, percent utilization, and so on) because there are always two distinct endpoints in a single flow. To show the statistics for top endpoints, NTA disregards the source and destination endpoint, treating them as individual endpoints. This doubles the total amount of data for a resource.

Example flows:

SourceIP

DestinationIP

Protocol

Bytes

IP1

IP2

TCP

50

IP2

IP3

TCP

40

Total bytes transferred by TCP protocol = 50 + 40 = 90 bytes.
Note: This is also applicable to other resources.

However, endpoints are counted in the following way:

Endpoint

Bytes transferred

IP1

50 bytes

IP2

50+40=90 bytes

IP3

40 bytes

Total bytes transferred by endpoints  = IP1 + IP2 + IP3 = 50 + 90 + 40 = 180 bytes. This is double than the other resources.
