Re-index NetFlow tables in the Orion database

Updated April 28th, 2016

Unlike with other database maintenance operations, re-indexing database tables requires stopping the SolarWinds services that write to those tables.

If an Orion NTA installation is running slowly, first follow the procedures in this KB article to improve performance.

If you have already performed those taks (switching DNS to on demand, saving a subset of collected NetFlow data and aggregating data in memory for top talker resources, and turned of searchability by IP address) you can consider re-indexing the NetFlow tables in the Orion database.

Re-indexing NetFlow database tables requires downtime in capturing and processing collected NetFlow data. Time to re-index your tables depends on their size. As a rule, re-indexing takes 30 minutes per 10GB of table data.

To determine the current size of a database table:

  1. Open the SolarWinds Database Manager in the program group (SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features).
  2. Click Add Server and enter the name of your SQL Server host.
  3. Expand the tree for the relevant database in the left pane and double-click.
  4. Click Query and in the text box enter:

    sp_spaceused [table_name]

  5. Review the number of rows in the table and the amount space the table occupies on disk.

To re-index NetFlow database tables:

Beware that the NetFlowService will be shutdown for the duration of the reindexing operation and that you should not cancel the operation once that it is underway. Follow these steps to proceed:

  1. Double-click NetFlowDatabaseMaintenance.exe in the Orion NTA program directory by default: C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\NetFlowTrafficAnalysis\).
  2. Check Re-index NetFlow data tables and then select the relevant index fragmentation threshold at which to evaluate each table for re-indexing.
  3. Click Next.

Note:When you click Next the software immediately begins re-indexing relevant NetFlow tables.
