NTA exception: The file exists

Issue

In SolarWinds NTA 4.0 through 4.1.2, the Flow Storage may crash with this exception:

System.IO.IOException: The file exists.

ERROR:

ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.NetFlow.Service.Program - Unhandled exception: Message: The file exists.

Environment

  • NTA 4.0 through NTA 4.1.2

Cause

This error is caused when the NTA Application server or the Flow Storage Database (FSDB) server have more than 65565 files in the C:\Windows\temp directory. The Windows operating system runs out of unused temporary file names and cannot create new temp files.

Resolution

  1. Stop Netflow or SolarWinds NetFlow Storage service.

  2. Go to C:\Windows\Temp in a file explorer window.
  3. Delete the tmp*.tmp files.
  4. Restart services

This issues is fixed in NTA 4.2
