NTA 4.5 Release Notes

Last updated: December 4, 2018

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in NetFlow Traffic Analyzer 4.5. They also provide information about upgrades and describe workarounds for known issues.

For NTA environment requirements, see NTA 4.5 System Requirements.

IMPORTANT: Microsoft SQL Server 2016 SP1 or later is required for the NTA SQL Flow Storage database. See NTA 4.5 System Requirements.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements NTA offers in this release, or compare NTA 4.5 with previous releases of NTA.

NTA 4.5 is an Orion Platform product, and it runs on Orion Platform 2018.4. For new features and improvements on Orion Platform 2018.4, see the NPM Release Notes.

NTA-specific alerting

As of NTA 4.5, you can create alerts on recently processed flows to quickly identify and solve quality issues. The new Create a Flow Alert panel creates a standard Orion alert based on Custom SWQL query. The Create a Flow Alert panel provides the following alerts:

  • The alert Application Threshold notifies you that a NetFlow-reporting node reports traffic for an application or NBAR2 application over or under a certain threshold.
  • The alert Application present in Top Applications / Application not present in Top Applications notifies you that an application or NBAR2 application is or is not present in Top Applications or NBAR2 Applications lists.
  • The alert Flow no longer being received notifies you that a device (node or interface) is not sending data over a defined time period.

For more information on flow alerts, see NTA-specific alerts in the NTA Administrator Guide.

New customer installation

For fresh installations, you can co-locate the Orion Database and the NTA SQL Flow Storage database on one SQL server. For more information on installing, see the SolarWinds Orion Installer. For recommendations on sizing, see What are the hardware recommendations for the NTA 4.4 SQL Flow Storage database.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • When upgrading from NTA 4.2.x to NTA 4.4 or 4.5, you will not be able to migrate your flow data to the new NTA Flow Storage database, as data migration is not supported. Data migration is supported only when upgrading from NTA 4.4 to NTA 4.5. For more information, see this article.
  • Review the deprecation notices.
  • Always back up your Orion database and NTA Flow Storage database before upgrading.
  • Do not use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to upgrade a remote NTA Flow Storage Database. For more information on upgrading a remote NTA Flow Storage Database, see this article.
  • When upgrading to NTA 4.5, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.
  • When upgrading to NTA 4.5 with custom menus, you can not see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu. For details, see this article.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
  • See the SolarWinds Orion Installer documentation for more detail.
