NetFlow Traffic Analyzer 4.2 Release Notes

Last updated: June 7, 2016

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide information about upgrades and describe workarounds for known issues.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements that NTA offers in this release.

Brand new look and feel

The first thing you’ll notice about this release is that the SolarWinds Orion Platform user interface is more modern-looking. The main menu bar on the top of  every page has been reorganized to make navigation faster and easier, and to save space so there’s more room for data. We've also condensed the Notifications into a drop-down located in the upper-right corner.

ServiceNow integration

You can now integrate SolarWinds Orion Platform products with the ServiceNow, Inc. incident management system. With this integration you can:

  • Automatically create incidents in ServiceNow based on alerts that trigger in your SolarWinds Orion products

  • Synchronize the acknowledgement of SolarWinds alerts and ServiceNow incidents.

  • Update, close, and reopen ServiceNow incidents.

More powerful and easier-to-use discovery

As part of the new discovery, you can add an Active Directory (AD) Controller and then select the Organizational Units (OUs) you want to scan. Using AD for discovery is particularly useful for adding large subnets because SolarWinds Orion products can communicate directly with the devices instead of scanning every IP address.

Automatic Monitoring imports discovered devices, such as nodes, interfaces, or volumes, based on the monitoring settings you define. This means you don't have to go through the discovery import wizard after each discovery. Anything new will be monitored automatically.

Newly Supported Flow Technologies

  • NBAR2 application recognition is now supported for devices enabled for export of NBAR2 data, enabling you to identify applications on your network and plan remediations. NBAR2 is an application classification system that is used with deep packet inspection technologies to provide better visibility into network traffic. You can identify which applications, categories, and subcategories are most active.
  • NTA now supports monitoring of Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (WLC) and HP NetStreamer V9. To monitor WLC activity, open the Network > Wireless Summary View in the Orion Web Console.

New NTA Feature

SolarWinds NTA's CBQoS, NBAR2, and WLC reports now include charts.

Performance improvements

Reports, Views, and Detail views that are filtered by specific nodes or interfaces are generated faster.

New customer installation

For information about installing NetFlow Traffic Analyzer see the SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer Administrator Guide.

SolarWinds NTA Requirements

  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) 12.0 hosted on the same server.
  • MS SQL Database
For more information about NPM and SQL Server requirements, refer to the SolarWinds NPM requirements.
  • NTA Flow Storage Database
    • You can use the NTA Flow Storage Database embedded in your NTA server or install NTA Flow Storage Database remotely on any computer in your network with the following requirements.
    • 64-bit Windows Server 2012, or 2008 R2 Server

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • When upgrading to NTA 4.2 on the same server with DPA installed, the DPAO piece causes issues with alerting
  • NTA 4.2 no longer supports OS Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, 2008, 2008 SP2, and 2008 R2 without SP1.
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to NTA 4.2. This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • When upgrading to NTA 4.2, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue. This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
  • Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.

How to upgrade

Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:

Known issues

Conflict with NTA and NTA Flow Storage Database on same server

Issue: NTA recommends installing the NTA Flow Storage Database and NTA on different servers. Gaps can occur in flow data when NTA and the NTA Flow Storage Database are installed on the same server, which can result from insufficient resources available on the server.

Work-around: To resolve this conflict, move your NTA Flow Storage Database to a separate server. For more information, see Moving NTA Flow Storage Database.

The All Groups resource is empty after an upgrade

Issue: The All Groups resource is empty after an upgrade if you’ve edited the resource properties to group by a property before the upgrade.

Work-around: Edit the resource and save your changes.

Cannot group custom properties by categories

Issue: When group custom properties by categories, no results are returned and the loading screen does not complete.

Work-around: Search for the category.

End of support

SolarWinds NTA no longer supports the following software. For information about supported versions of SolarWinds products, see this article.

  • Windows Server 2003 on the server hosting the NTA installation or the NTA Flow Storage Database
  • 32-bit operating system; NTA 4.1 and later requires a 64-bit operating system.
