  • Fastbit Studio improvements, such as highlighting introduced into query editing
  • NBAR2 reports are rendered faster
  • Improved stability of upgrades

New Orion Platform features and improvements

NTA 4.2.1 includes Orion Platform 2016.2. Read this section for information about Orion Platform improvements relevant for NTA.

High Availability

This release of SolarWinds Orion Platform features almost instantaneous, automated failover to a secondary server to ensure continuous monitoring when a component failure occurs. SolarWinds High Availability (HA) provides failover HA for your environment maintained through the Orion web console. Easily create an HA pool, update your secondary server, and activate HA in your current Orion environment.

Web-based License Manager

Easily add, activate, and manage Orion product licenses through the web-based License Manager. Accessing the License Manager on your main polling engine, you can monitor and update full product and evaluation licenses for your main poller, additional pollers, additional web servers, stackable pollers, and high availability pools all through one page. The License Manager also provides automatic online and offline modes for managing licenses. Add and manage evaluations with ease, including HA.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version of NTA, be aware of the following considerations:

  • When upgrading to NTA 4.2.1 on the same server with DPA installed, the DPAO piece causes issues with alerting
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to NTA 4.2.1.
  • When upgrading to NTA 4.2.1, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue.
  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. Learn more about custom code.
  • Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.

Known issues

Conflict with NTA and NTA Flow Storage Database on same server

Issue: NTA recommends installing the NTA Flow Storage Database and NTA on different servers. Gaps can occur in flow data when NTA and the NTA Flow Storage Database are installed on the same server, which can result from insufficient resources available on the server.

Work-around: To resolve this conflict, move your NTA Flow Storage Database to a separate server. For more information, see the Migration Guide.

Agent deployment to host without a /tmp directory

Issue: Agent deployment may not succeed if Linux host does not have a /tmp directory.

Work-around: Rerun the agent deployment to properly complete the deployment.

Account limitations for Windows group accounts

Issue: Accounts that are added as part of a Windows group account do not respect menu or view restrictions.

Work-around: Individually add accounts.

End of support

SolarWinds NTA no longer supports the following software. See Currently supported software versions for more information.

  • Windows Server 2003 on the server hosting the NTA installation or the NTA Flow Storage Database
  • 32-bit operating system; NTA 4.1 and later requires a 64-bit operating system.

The Advanced Alert Manager and Basic Alert Manager applications are deprecated features and will be removed in an upcoming release. The web-based Alert Manager replaces this functionality.
